Psychological Concepts of "THE OTHER": Embracing the Compass of the Self. Lecture and discussion.
"The Other" often conjures up images of strange faces, practices and beliefs, usually in faraway places. At the same time that it challenges our understanding, our sense of normalcy, and sometimes even our sense of security, it is a label we all share. Discord based on conflicting views of each other and even the essence of human nature have plagued humankind since its beginnings. This presentation explores this dilemma and our relationship with The Other -- not as polarized sides, but instead as a reflection of a common, fundamental process of our individual psychological development, and raises important questions for discussion to begin finding viable solutions together.
The focus of the material presented directly relates to the how we conceive and establish the identity of "I" and the identity of "You". In addition, it deals with the related psychological dynamics of forming and maintaining both positive and negative belief systems attached to these identities. Particular attention is paid to how this human process of identity can become distorted to result in negative, adversarial, and even dangerous images of THE OTHER, and also how we can consciously transform our images to be more constructive, healthy, and compassionate in co-creating a true culture of peace.

This workshop contains of a lecture, small group experience, and discussion.
